Italy's Answer to Petrus: The Pure Merlot That Changed Everything

Masseto Toscana IGT 2022 750 ml (OWC, 3 bottles)

Italy's Answer to Petrus: The Pure Merlot That Changed Everything

For decades, Italian fine wine meant Sangiovese. Masseto rewrote that script with one grape on one hillside, and its prices have followed those of the Bordeaux it was once compared to. The 2022 sits at the top of recent vintages.

In the 1990s, a vineyard near Bolgheri proved you could make a world-class Merlot outside Bordeaux. Masseto grew from an experimental plot within Ornellaia into an independent winery that now ranks among the world's absolute elite.

The 2022 is a vintage of contrasts. The summer was brutally hot and dry (75 days without rain), but August showers restored balance. Cool September nights were ideal for building sugar, aroma, and tannin structure. The result is a wine that combines power with unexpected freshness.

The scores confirm it: Decanter awarded 98 points, Jeb Dunnuck 98+, Jane Anson 98+, James Suckling 97, and Wine Spectator 96. Cellarmaster Gaia Cinnirella, assisted by consultant Michel Rolland, delivered a masterwork.

After 24 months in 100% new French oak and another 12 months in bottle, Masseto 2022 offers brilliant aromas of red berries, lavender, and sage, interwoven with dark minerals. The palate is rich and enveloping, with a vibrant acidity that holds everything in balance.

For anyone who believes great Merlot can only come from Pomerol, Masseto is the ultimate counterargument.
